Mark beautifully renovated our 100-year old Victorian house that had not been updated in decades. He stripped it down to the studs and rebuilt it with modern systems and materials. Architect Alec Tesa’s plans preserved the style while converting the interior space to an open layout. Mark is meticulous about details and proper workmanship. The Horan team worked on a partial tear-down and reconstruction that turned out better than we ever dreamed. The project threw a few curve balls our way, as all projects do, but Mark provided great advice and knowledge to guide us through. Although we introduced a few novel features to the project, HBC got up to speed quickly and installed them well. The cabinetry and finish carpentry were superb. As Connecticut residents my husband and I sought a nearby beach location for a summer home and settled on Rhode island. It was a perfect weekend drive for us and we were delighted to find a small but ideally located waterfront home. We enjoyed it as such for years until deciding to renovate and transform it to a family friendly year round residence. Uncertain as to how we might accomplish this we turned to Horan Building for guidance. Mark Horan came highly recommended as a skilled and professional builder with a wide range of noteworthy beautiful projects in the area. After our initial consult we were convinced that we shared the same image for our reconstruction and happily moved forward with the project. Mark’s vision helped us to seamlessly integrate the old with the new to create a modern, open and spacious home which we love. We were amazed with the finished product, completed to the highest architectural standards, in a timely manner ( he advised he would complete the project by the end of Spring so as to not lose the Summer season on the water… it was finished and we moved in early May) ! Throughout the project we were kept updated as to any cost changes due to modifications of the plans which kept us all on the agreed budget. My husband really appreciated Mark’s business acumen and his strict adherence to the process of every change order initiated by us, be priced and signed by us before the work was begun. We initiated over 30 change orders and at the end of the project, there were no surprises – none. The project team at Horan Building was creative and hard-working, attentive to every detail and were a pleasure to work with. We hired Horan Builders to renovate our vacation home originally built in the 1860’s. Mark Horan guided us thru the historic commision hurdles we encountered, and stood by us every step of the way. This building was transformed from a big box, into a welcoming 19th century period home that now belongs in the historic town where it is located. The quality of workmanship was superb and attention to detail is displayed throughout. Several years later, we decided to move into the town permanently and found an old 1860’s (again!) B&B for sale. I am currently in my second home project with Horan Building Co, and went back to them for good reason. My first home was build by Mark over 20 years ago and the quality of the construction has held up as though it was newly built. The house Horan Building built for us looks like it’s been here forever. It is a classic New England shingle style house that looks completely natural here in Newport. That was very important to us when we were looking for a home here. The house position on the lot and its design maximizes the benefits of the lot. Mark and his team are extraordinary at figuring out how to position a house and place rooms to maximize ocean views and sunlight. We find that to be a real rarity in the industry but it has had great impact on how we enjoy the space. The craftsmanship is incredible. Mark employs a group of highly skills carpenters and stonemasons that do incredible work. The house has beautiful custom made cabinetry through the kitchen, vaulted ceilings in the living room and bead board ceilings in the kitchen, fieldstone fireplaces, and an enormous kitchen island and counter in mahogany that are reminiscent of a boat deck, all of this was built by Mark’s in-house team. The value is right. While this house was not inexpensive, we feel like we got tremendous value. We got a house that we will own forever, is rock solid, and has given us no headaches. Mark is especially good at knowing where to invest capital in what will be appreciated, but also not going overboard on frivolity that will drive up costs for no reason. And we can also say that he is a rarity in the industry in that mark is smart, professional, honest, committed to doing good work, and a lot of fun to be around. Mark and his team put their hearts and souls into what they do and you can literally feel that in the house. We are absolutely thrilled with this house and we credit Mark for building a masterpiece.
